Transcending Ignorance – day retreat
Sunday, January 7th @ 10:00 am – 4:00 pm
The four defilements about self (the atma kleshas)
These four defilements are innate, we are born with them. When I first learnt about the atma kleshas I realised I had been giving myself a hard time. I thought I was being unethical when in fact they are just the result of being human and having a body which makes us automatically self-centred some of the time. That was a relief.
It is also important to become aware of them so we see how they can be an unhelpful driving force in our lives and could lead to unskillfulness. However in themselves they are ethically neutral, it is not unskillful to be ignorant, and they don’t have to stop us from acting with kindness and awareness.
Come and find out what they are and how we can reduce their influence.
We will explore 2 kleshas through meditation and 2 through interactive activities and reflection. The day will end with a Buddhist ritual where the light of Buddha Vairocana, who sits at the centre of the mandala, dispels the darkness of ignorance. The enlightened mind shines throughout space and self-centredness is replaced by well wishing for all beings everywhere.
This is an intensive day retreat where you will learn how to apply the Dharma to your life through meditation, reflection, interaction with the Sangha and Buddhist ritual.
All welcome. Please bring a vegan lunch to share.
Shubha will be leading the day. She is an experienced, knowledgeable and inspiring teacher who joined our Sangha in Ipswich after nearly 30 years with the London Buddhist Centre.
