Women’s Sangha Gathering with Mosaic

September 24, 2023 @ 10:00 am 4:00 pm

Join the women of the sangha for a day of meditation, talk and discussion. All who identify as women are welcome to join. We look forward to seeing you.

This month we‘re welcoming Mosaic who will be sharing on the theme of “Walking in the footsteps of Mahaprajapati”.

Foster mother and aunt of Siddartha Gautama, Mahaprajapati raised the man who went on to become Buddha Shakyamuni. She also led 500 women to become the first female Buddhist community. Travelling on foot together, they walked 100s of kilometers from Kapilavastu to Vaishali to ask the Buddha to ordain them. Imagining the hardships and sacrifice that this would have entailed, gives us an understanding and appreciation of the depths of their faith. It also shows us the strength and value of sisterhood on the spiritual path, inspiring us to walk on together, shoulder to shoulder – regardless of obstacles.

On this women’s day, through meditation, discussion and puja we will create a space of inspiration, strength and celebration of our beautiful sisterhood.

Order of the Day:

  • 10.00 Introduction
  • 10.15 Meditation
  • 11.15 Tea break
  • 11.30 Talk
  • 12.15 Discussion groups
  • 12.45 Feedback
  • 13.00 Lunch
  • 14.00 Polishing Our Bangles
  • 15.00 Pranjaparamita Puja
  • 16.00 Finish and go home

There is an invitation (not an obligation) to bring along and object or story that symbolises an achievement for you – a moment of overcoming, being strong, feeling proud. It can be anything – a 5m swimming badge, an academic certificate, your family, travel, a realisation. We will have an opportunity to share these, consider their significance and celebrate each other.

Please bring a vegan lunch to share. We look forward to seeing you.

Bio: Mosaic is a mitra from Ipswich who is training for Ordination. She was on a pilgrimage to India at the start of the year and was really moved and inspired by the story of Mahaprajapati when visiting Vaishali. She was also struck by the fact that she and many others on the trip didn’t know this crucial story of Buddhism.
